What to tell the dispatcher
A short, clear description gets a plumber on the way faster.
- Your address and town. Including whether you are near the water or on a hill.
- What you see, hear or smell. Water, sewage, a gas smell, a loud noise.
- Whether the water is stopped. Say whether you found the main valve.
- What heats the house and the water. Gas, oil, propane or electric.
- Whether you are on a well and septic. It changes the first questions the plumber asks.
Gas, power and fire: who to call first
If you smell gas, leave the building and call 911 and the gas utility from outside. The state lists Southern Connecticut Gas for Guilford, with an emergency line of 800-513-8898, and the Guilford Fire Department asks residents with gas or propane leaks to contact 911. For a power outage, the Guilford Fire Department page gives the Eversource outage line as 800-286-2000.
For a fire, call 911. For non-emergency fire questions, the town lists 203-453-8448 for dispatch. Once the danger has passed, call us for the plumbing repair, and see our plumbing services and service areas for what we cover.
Before you dig anywhere on your property
Connecticut's Call Before You Dig program requires a call to 811 or a visit to CBYD.com at least two full working days before digging with power equipment. If you hire a contractor to dig, the contractor must make the call. It is free, and it keeps buried gas, electric and water lines from being struck.
